History

The game of rugby is growing in popularity at a local level. This led a bunch of young men from the Capital City to come together and start practising the sport. In simple words, the Valletta Lions Rugby Football Club started off.

The idea of founding a rugby team in Valletta goes back September 2007. The topic was raised for the first time, while chatting on the Valletta F. C. forum www.vallettaside.com. A couple of days later, these young men started to enjoy the sport at Salinos Grounds.

People started to hear about the rugby guys by word of mouth. In just over a month coach Roger Davies came to the team's assistance in order to teach the basics. In just over a month, the squad was made up of over 20 players, a real achievement for a local team.

The new team brought a new breed of players into the local rugby scene.

Valletta Lions RFC is the first local team in Malta originating from a locality. In less then 6 months the Lions were ready to take the field with passion and pride that is unthinkable of in the local rugby.

The 2008/2009 season will be listed as the league debut season for the Valletta Lions RFC, the first game being against Overseas RUFC, the oldest rugby club in Malta. Even though the club has a very short histroy, it has been reached important milestones both on and off the field:

Winning the first game against Stompers B RFC

Two players being called to form part of the National squad

The first team to carry out an organ donation campaign

Contributed to charity event Istrina
